‘Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow.’
Waller’s Labyrinth is a visually impactful artwork that combines hundreds of second-hand toy cars, gold mirror tiles, and play-full creativity. While aiming to reflect the nostalgic design and atmosphere of St Judes, it also invites you to experience it physically as well as in prayer and discernment.
Waller’s Labyrinth comments on the challenges of the Church of England as it struggles with matters of doctrine and the stewardship of creation (having set a target to become carbon neutral by 2030), and reimagines the tradition of a labyrinth to create a metaphorical path to unity.
‘Not a maze or a puzzle to be solved, the Labyrinth suggest more an analogy for life; a path of meaning to be experienced.’ It has one way in and one way out. Its path is convoluted; has no dead ends. When we walk the path, we go around tight corners; along short and long sections, sometimes out on the edge or twisting in the centre. We are never really lost, but can never quite see where we are going.’ (Pattakos 2021).

Previously, the artist, David, and his twin, John, have created various installations using the ‘colour pallet’ of toy cars. The collection – now nearing 10,000 – required over a decade to assemble, affirming the brothers’ determination and obsession to see them amassed. The blueprint for Waller’s installations was John’s Cars, Cars Everywhere, a collage of 1980’s magazine car adverts and logos reflecting on the ever-increasing pollutive, population of cars on the planet. The image released the imaginative handbrake for the prototype Car Atlas, where each car - placed one-by-one - followed a spiral to form a dense, vibrant, multi- coloured car-mosaic. The road ahead saw Waller’s successful, award-winning Car Atlas – Rainbow installation, while perhaps more immersive, David’s Labyrinth continues to question the automobile’s omni-presence and aims to evoke the spiritual, emotional, and physical experience of the visitor.
David T Waller graduated with a BA (Honours) in Fine Art – Sculpture. His experimental style combines many differing influences and techniques. Initially inspired by the figure, David’s artwork has become deeply reflective towards his past upbringing and interests. His new work will be shown at The Original Gallery, Crouch End Library, London N8 during September-October 2025.
St Jude on the Hill is one of the U.K’s 300 Major Churches and was built by the visionary architect Edwin Lutyens, the Labyrinth sits directly below the church’s dome and the Star of David.
Visitors are welcome from 9am until 6pm from 1st August until 14th August 2024.
